A Spark from the Flint Mechanism
In a lighter with a classic flint mechanism, the flint works with a knurled wheel. Friction produced as the wheel turns generates a spark that ignites the fuel in the device. The flint does not replace gas or lighter fluid—its purpose is to produce the spark.

Replacement and Safe Storage
