A wick in good condition provides the path for fuel to travel from inside the insert to the flame. Its condition affects whether the lighter ignites consistently and works without repeated attempts.
The wick's role
The wick is not fuel itself. It draws fuel from the soaked interior of the insert and carries it upward through capillary action, where the vapors can be ignited by a spark. ZIPPO wicks restore this fuel delivery path when the existing component is worn.
The tip exposed to the flame can become charred, frayed, or shorter over time. If the lighter contains fuel and produces a proper spark but ignition remains weak or inconsistent, the wick is one component to inspect. Replacement is particularly useful when an undamaged section of the old wick can no longer be pulled into the correct position.
Replacement, refilling, and safe handling
Install the new wick in the insert according to the instructions for your lighter. After refilling, allow time for the fuel to reach the wick's tip. Attempting to ignite a dry wick can scorch it unnecessarily.
Refill with fuel appropriate for the lighter type. Extinguish all flames and work away from heat in a well-ventilated area. Clean up spilled fuel before lighting, and store both the product and fuel out of children's reach.
